Explore the River

Your Way

Choose your kayak, pick a day and enjoy the river.

Before heading out, please make sure you understand the basic rules of using canals and rivers in the UK.

Local Canal Routes – Licence Included

For selected local canal routes featured in the Routes section, Kayak Away may arrange and purchase the required waterway licence on your behalf for a smoother and more convenient experience.
The cost of this licence is included in your rental price.
If you would like to know exactly which routes are covered by this included licence arrangement, please contact us directly before your trip.
At the moment, the routes covered are mainly those featured on our partner Facebook page Kayak & Paddling Northampton, which highlights recommended paddling locations in the local area.
You can find a link to this page in our Routes section.
If you plan to paddle outside the covered routes, you may need to arrange and purchase the appropriate licence yourself.
It is your responsibility to ensure you have the correct permissions for any waterways not included in our local licence arrangement.

Basic Waterway Rules

  • Keep to the left-hand side of the waterway
  • Pass oncoming boats on your right-hand side
  • Give way to larger vessels (e.g. narrowboats) and allow them plenty of space
  • Slow down and move aside when boats are passing
  • Do not block narrow sections, bridges, or access points
  • Do not stop in unsafe or restricted areas
  • Do not litter – please respect the environment at all times

Locks & Water Control Structures

If you encounter locks (water level control systems used by boats):

  • Exit the water safely before the lock

Licences & Further Information

Depending on where you choose to paddle, a licence or permit may be required.
